Care deeply, protect safely.

Her motto in care

For 25 years, Normie Paranga-Natividad has built a nursing career on service. Raised in Villamor Airbase, Barangay 183, Pasay City, she now works in the Aviation Department of Etihad Airways in Abu Dhabi, where her work helps keep crews fit to fly, workplaces safe and health risks caught early.

Courage in the face of fear

One of the most difficult moments of Normie’s career came during the COVID-19 pandemic. “While the world stayed home, we continued to show up day after day, facing the unknown.” The fear of becoming infected was real, but the fear of bringing the virus home to the people she loves was even greater.

There were moments of doubt, exhaustion and anxiety, yet she chose to keep going. “I realized courage is not the absence of fear but showing up despite it.” Her passion to care, to serve and to stand firm when everything felt uncertain carried her through.

“There is a quiet fulfillment in knowing lives are safer because of the work I do.”

The comfort of genuine empathy

For Normie, the unspoken part of nursing is showing genuine empathy: explaining a procedure in a calm and gentle way, listening to a patient’s fears without rushing, and offering a reassuring smile. These small but meaningful gestures bring comfort, especially when patients feel most vulnerable.

A life of service

Normie’s “why” has always been service. Nursing is her way of giving back to her fellow Filipinos, to the UAE community and to the aviation industry. Every day she helps ensure aircraft are staffed by people who are physically and mentally fit, that workplaces remain safe, and that health risks are identified early. “Each patient encounter reminds me that my role is not only clinical but also about advocacy, safety, and trust.”

When people look back on her career, she hopes they remember a nurse who combined technical excellence with compassion, worked with integrity, supported her team, mentored others to succeed, and left a legacy of professionalism and care.

Heart, hands and head

Growing up in Pasay taught Normie resilience, close family ties and a strong sense of service. Filipino values like respect, empathy, compassion and integrity shaped how she relates to patients and colleagues, while her BSN and ongoing professional training prepared her for specialised roles in aviation and occupational health. “My upbringing gave me the heart for nursing, my education and training gave me the hands and the head to do it well.”

That Filipino malasakit, she says, means going beyond duty: “we speak gently, anticipate needs before they are voiced, and treat every patient like family.”

“Leadership is not about a title, it’s about being reliable, ready, and helping others through uncertainty.”

Clarity under pressure

In aviation health, Normie says, there is no room for panic, only clarity. She focuses on staying calm, thinking clearly and communicating simply with her teammates. Years of experience have taught her to prioritise quickly, share tasks when needed and keep things organised even when everything feels chaotic. She also enjoys helping others prepare, because well-trained, confident colleagues can perform under the most demanding circumstances.

Thriving in diversity

Her biggest culture shock in the UAE was the sheer diversity and the different communication styles of a multicultural workplace. It felt overwhelming at first, but she embraced diversity as an opportunity to learn and grow. Respect, openness and a sense of humour helped her bridge cultural gaps and thrive.
