To value, to respect, to care: Elevating healing for every individual.

Her motto in care

Some of the most important care a nurse gives is never spoken aloud. For Katherine Mae Ciolo-Abad, a Registered Nurse from Cavite with 14 years in the profession, it lives in a calm demeanor, absolute discretion and the quiet promise that every patient will be treated with dignity. Today she brings that philosophy to the Out-Patient Department VIP Clinic of Sheikh Khalifa Medical City in Abu Dhabi.

Starting over, and thriving

“Nurses are inherently resilient individuals, uniquely capable of adapting to any situation,” Katherine says. Her own ultimate test came when she chose to begin her nursing career anew in a foreign country. Navigating a completely different environment, adapting to a new culture and mastering an unfamiliar healthcare system were profound challenges. Through steadfast determination, unwavering faith and a clear focus on her professional goals, she found the strength to overcome them and thrive.

The art of intuitive presence

Beyond clinical skills and technical precision, Katherine believes the “unspoken” part of nursing that comforts patients most is intuitive presence. Comfort is often delivered without words: in the quiet reassurance of a calm demeanor, in discretion that builds immediate trust, and in the deliberate effort to make every patient feel respected and uniquely valued.

“It is this silent promise of safety and dignity that truly heals.”

A calling, not just a career

Katherine’s “why” is rooted in a genuine passion for caring for others and the privilege of making a tangible difference in her patients’ lives. True healing, she says, begins when a patient feels seen as an individual, and every person who walks through the clinic doors deserves compassionate, respectful and personalised care.

Working in an outpatient specialty setting has taught her that exceptional healthcare relies on clinical excellence, open and empathetic communication, and collaborative teamwork. Each day is a fresh opportunity to care, serve and advocate for her patients.

When people look back on her career, she hopes they remember a compassionate, dependable and dedicated nurse who treated every individual with dignity, respect and empathy, caring not only for patients’ clinical health but also for their overall well-being and peace of mind.

Malasakit as an extension of family

For Katherine, the Filipino touch is malasakit: a profound, self-giving compassion and protective care for others. “In our culture, caregiving is not just a duty; it is an extension of family.” As an OPD nurse, she makes sure every patient feels heard, valued and at ease from the moment they step into the clinic until they leave, anchoring her practice in kindness, patience and empathy even in a fast-paced environment.

“Even the smallest, quietest acts of genuine compassion have the power to fundamentally transform a patient’s healthcare journey.”

From alone to at home

Katherine’s greatest culture shock was moving to the UAE entirely on her own, without family nearby, while adapting to a new culture and work environment. Beginning her nursing journey in the homecare sector quickly taught her to be independent, adaptable and confident in her clinical practice.

Over time, she built meaningful connections with colleagues and embraced the diversity of cultures around her, and the UAE became her second home. Marrying and starting her own family here completed that transition, giving her a deeply rooted support system and a beautiful sense of belonging.

Built on a Philippine foundation

Growing up and completing her nursing education in the Philippines instilled in Katherine the core values of compassion, hard work and resilience. Her training gave her a robust clinical groundwork and prepared her for fast-paced, demanding healthcare environments, shaping the professional she is today.

A Filipino smile under pressure

Exceptional patient care demands professionalism, discretion and a commitment to excellence. In high-pressure situations, Katherine stays composed, adaptable and focused on teamwork. Even during the most challenging, high-volume shifts, she makes a point of keeping a warm, reassuring Filipino smile. That simple act of positivity helps defuse tension, keeps the team grounded and preserves compassionate care when it is needed most.

A message to Filipinos abroad

“To my fellow Kababayans who are silently battling extreme exhaustion or the heavy longing for family: always remember that admitting you are tired is not a sign of weakness, but a way to protect yourself. Serving and working thousands of miles away from our homeland is an immense sacrifice, so it is completely normal to have days when you feel like you can no longer go on.

What truly matters is that we rise up and keep pushing forward.”
