Choose compassion first; knowledge has its greatest value when guided by a caring heart.
When the COVID-19 pandemic left many people fearful and uncertain, Julian Jose M. Beato stepped forward. Despite his family’s concerns, he volunteered as a COVID nurse. Today, the nurse from the City of Cabuyao, Laguna, brings seven years of experience to an Emergency Department in Abu Dhabi.
Stepping forward in a crisis
His experience with the Philippine Red Cross had taught him that helping others in times of crisis is both a responsibility and a calling, so volunteering during the pandemic felt like the right thing to do. What carried him through was a sense of purpose and compassion for those who needed care the most.
Beyond clinical skills, Julian believes the greatest comfort nurses can give is their presence: “listening to them, reassuring them, and showing genuine empathy during some of the most difficult moments of their lives.”
“Clinical knowledge is important, but compassion is what truly connects us with patients and helps them heal beyond their physical condition.”
Malasakit, learned at home
Julian credits his upbringing for shaping the nurse he is today. His father taught him the value of malasakit and the importance of caring for others with empathy and compassion. “While my education provided the clinical knowledge and skills needed to become a nurse, my family taught me that kindness, respect, and a caring heart are what truly make a lasting impact on patients.”
At the bedside, he brings the Filipino touch of treating patients like family, making them feel heard, cared for and valued, along with the values of respect, humility and hard work. “Whether it’s staying a little longer to provide comfort or helping a colleague during a busy shift, I believe these qualities help create trust and meaningful connections with patients and their families.”
Learning and adapting in the UAE
His biggest culture shock on moving to the UAE was seeing how advanced the healthcare technology and systems were. It was a completely different environment from what he was used to, but he embraced the opportunity to learn, adapt and grow professionally.
“Quality patient care is always a team effort.”
Teamwork under pressure
In a high-pressure setting like the Emergency Department, Julian believes strong teamwork is essential. He focuses on staying calm, communicating clearly and supporting his colleagues whenever needed, and he is not afraid to ask for help or to offer it. “When team members communicate well, respect one another, and stay focused on the patient’s needs, even the most demanding situations can be handled effectively.”
His “why”
Nursing has brought Julian difficult situations and emotionally demanding moments, yet he remains committed because he believes it is his calling. What keeps him going is knowing he can make a positive difference in someone’s life, even through a simple act of kindness. He hopes to be remembered as a compassionate nurse who treated every patient with kindness, empathy and respect.
“To fellow Filipinos who may be experiencing burnout or loneliness, I want to remind you that your feelings are valid. Nursing can be physically and emotionally demanding, but your work matters more than you realize.
Even on your hardest days, your compassion and dedication can bring comfort and hope to someone in need. Take care of yourself, seek support when needed, and remember that you are making a difference every day.”
