Free Lesson · Kindergarten: Shapes, Colors and Counting to 5

Free sample lesson · Nursery / Kindergarten · about 30 minutes with a parent
No login needed. A real lesson in the FI weekly format. Young children learn best by playing, talking and touching — so this lesson uses things you already have at home.

Goal

My child can name 4 shapes (circle, square, triangle, rectangle), sort things by color, and count up to 5 objects.

1. Sing and move (5 minutes)

Count 1 to 5 on your fingers together. Clap 5 times, jump 3 times, touch your nose 2 times. Say each number out loud.

2. Learn the shapes

  • Circle — round, no corners. Like a plate or a coin.
  • Square — 4 sides that are all the same, 4 corners. Like a cracker.
  • Triangle — 3 sides, 3 corners. Like a slice of pizza.
  • Rectangle — 4 sides, 2 long and 2 short. Like a door or a phone.

Draw each shape on paper. Let your child trace it with a finger and say its name.

3. Shape hunt (10 minutes)

Walk around the house. Find one thing for each shape. Ask: “How many corners does it have?” Count the corners together.

4. Color sort and count (10 minutes)

Put 10–15 small things on the table (crayons, blocks, buttons, toy cars). Ask your child to:

  1. Make a group of all the red things, then blue, then yellow.
  2. Count each group, touching each object once: “1, 2, 3…”
  3. Say which group has more and which has fewer.

5. Check (2 minutes)

Hold up 3 spoons — “How many?” Point to a plate — “What shape?” If your child is not sure, show it again and try once more tomorrow. That is normal!

For parents

  • Praise trying, not only right answers: “You counted carefully!”
  • Keep it short and fun. Stop before your child gets tired.
  • Use English, Filipino or your home language — understanding matters most.
