Goal
By the end of this lesson I can read 5-digit numbers, say the value of each digit, and round numbers to the nearest hundred and thousand.
1. Warm-up (5 minutes)
Say these numbers out loud: 4,503 · 9,080 · 7,777. Which digit in 7,777 has the biggest value? (The first 7 — it means 7,000.)
2. Learn
Every digit has a place, and the place tells us its value. Look at 47,352:
| Ten thousands | Thousands | Hundreds | Tens | Ones |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | 7 | 3 | 5 | 2 |
| 40,000 | 7,000 | 300 | 50 | 2 |
Expanded form: 47,352 = 40,000 + 7,000 + 300 + 50 + 2
In words: forty-seven thousand, three hundred fifty-two.
3. Worked example: rounding
Rule: find the place you are rounding to, then look at the digit just to its right. If it is 5 or more, round up. If it is 4 or less, keep the digit the same. All digits after it become 0.
- Round 47,352 to the nearest thousand: the thousands digit is 7. Look right → 3 (less than 5). Keep 7 → 47,000.
- Round 47,352 to the nearest hundred: the hundreds digit is 3. Look right → 5 (5 or more). Round up to 4 → 47,400.
4. Try it yourself
- What is the value of the 6 in 36,214?
- Write 80,509 in expanded form.
- Write the number: 20,000 + 4,000 + 70 + 3
- Round 63,782 to the nearest thousand.
- Round 15,449 to the nearest hundred.
- Which is greater: 45,099 or 45,190? Explain how you know.
- A barangay has 28,650 residents. The captain says “about 29,000.” Is that correct? Explain.
Show answers (parents)
- 6,000
- 80,000 + 500 + 9
- 24,073
- 64,000 (hundreds digit is 7, so round up)
- 15,400 (tens digit is 4, so keep)
- 45,190 is greater. Ten thousands and thousands are the same; compare hundreds: 1 hundred is more than 0 hundreds.
- Yes. Rounding to the nearest thousand: the hundreds digit is 6, so 28,650 rounds up to 29,000.
5. Real life (10 minutes)
Find a receipt, price tag or a news number at home with 4 or 5 digits. Write it in expanded form and round it to the nearest thousand.
6. Check your understanding
Finish these sentences: The value of a digit depends on … · When I round, I look at …
For parents
Ask your child to explain answers 6 and 7 in their own words — explaining is more important than speed. If a mistake happens, point to the place-value table and try one similar number together.
