Goal
I can read a short story, answer questions about it, and explain new words.
1. Words to know
- thirsty — needing water
- spill — when water falls out by accident
- sprout — a very small new plant
- ripe — ready to eat
2. Read the story
Read it once by yourself, then once out loud.
Lola’s Garden
Mia visits Lola every Saturday. Lola has a small garden behind her house. There are red tomatoes, long green string beans and tall corn.
“The plants are thirsty,” says Lola. Mia fills the watering can. She walks slowly so the water will not spill. She waters each plant.
Then Lola shows Mia a tiny green sprout. “This is a new pechay,” Lola says. “If we water it every day, it will grow big.”
Mia smiles. Before she goes home, she picks three ripe tomatoes for her mother. “Thank you, Lola!” she says. “I will come back next Saturday to water the pechay.”
3. Answer the questions
- Who does Mia visit?
- When does she visit?
- Name two plants in the garden.
- Why does Mia walk slowly?
- What will Mia do next Saturday?
- Do you think Mia is a good helper? Give one reason from the story.
Show answers (parents)
- Her Lola.
- Every Saturday.
- Any two: tomatoes, string beans, corn, pechay.
- So the water will not spill.
- Water the pechay.
- Answers vary. Example: “Yes, because she waters every plant carefully.”
4. Word work
Find the words with a double ll in the story: small, tall, spill, will. Say them, then write two more ll words (ball, bell, hill, doll…).
5. Write (5 minutes)
Write 2 sentences: What would you grow in your garden, and why?
For parents
Ask your child to retell the story in their own words: beginning, middle and end. If reading is slow, read one line together and let your child read the next.
