Serve with purpose, kindness, integrity and never stop learning.
Patients may not remember every clinical detail, but they remember how they were treated. That belief has guided Johnrey “Sam” Bravo Gecaraya through 17 years in nursing. Originally from Kidapawan City, North Cotabato, Sam now works in Dubai as an Aesthetic and Laser Therapist Nurse, bringing skill, heart and a deep commitment to care without judgment.
Tested, and made stronger
Some of Sam’s greatest tests were not only clinical. Navigating the profession as an LGBTQ+ nurse brought moments of doubt about whether it was possible to be authentic while also being seen as a capable and respected healthcare professional. Caring for patients through difficult diagnoses, loss and recovery while managing those personal challenges required resilience.
“What carried me through was authenticity and compassion,” Sam says. “I realized that the empathy I had developed from my own experiences helped me connect with patients in a deeper way.” Those experiences strengthened Sam’s confidence and commitment to creating a safe, inclusive space for every patient.
“The unspoken part of nursing is helping people feel accepted without judgment.”
Comfort in the smallest gestures
Sam knows what it feels like to hope to be treated with dignity and respect simply for who you are. That perspective shapes every interaction. Sometimes comfort comes from the smallest gestures: a reassuring conversation, listening without interrupting, remembering a patient’s preferred name, or simply being present during a vulnerable moment.
A “why” that has always been about people
Over the years, Sam’s “why” has evolved, but at its heart it has always been about people. Nursing is a calling to serve with compassion, empathy and respect. Every patient is a reminder that even the smallest acts of kindness can make a profound difference during someone’s most vulnerable moments.
“I want every patient, regardless of who they are or where they come from, to know they will be treated with dignity and without judgment,” Sam says. Knowing it is possible to create that sense of safety and trust is what continues to inspire Sam every day.
Malasakit: caring like family
To Sam, the Filipino touch is malasakit, a genuine commitment to care for people as if they were part of your own family. It means taking ownership of a patient’s well-being: noticing the little things that aren’t written in the chart, taking time to explain when someone is anxious, advocating for a patient who can’t speak for themselves, and making sure no one feels invisible. In the outpatient setting, it also means empowering patients with the knowledge and confidence to manage their health long after they leave the clinic.
“We don’t just treat illness. We care for the whole person. That is the Filipino touch I carry with me every day, wherever I practice.”
Learning rather than judging
Moving to the Middle East meant adapting to new traditions, communication styles and ways of life. Coming from a very expressive and familiar environment in the Philippines, adjusting to different cultural norms, language differences and more reserved social interactions took time. Sam overcame it by choosing to learn rather than judge: respecting local customs, listening to people’s stories and embracing the differences. Working in healthcare showed that cultural understanding builds trust, and the experience made Sam more adaptable, open-minded and culturally aware.
A foundation built at home
Sam’s upbringing and nursing education in the Philippines built resilience, compassion and strong clinical skills. Extensive hands-on experience in busy hospital and community settings taught the importance of patient safety, critical thinking, effective communication and working efficiently under pressure. The discipline and values gained at home continue to drive Sam to deliver safe, high-quality and compassionate care.
Steady when it matters
In a crisis, Sam stays calm, assesses the situation quickly and prioritizes patient care based on urgency. Resources are allocated efficiently, tasks are delegated according to each team member’s strengths, and clear communication keeps everyone aligned. “I respect the expertise of my colleagues and believe that a strong team can overcome challenges more effectively when everyone works toward the same goal.”
“To my fellow Filipinos abroad, remember that your sacrifices have meaning. It is normal to feel tired, miss home, or experience moments of loneliness, but never forget the strength and courage that brought you here. Take care of yourself as much as you care for others. Find your support system, stay connected with your loved ones, celebrate small victories, and remind yourself that you are making a difference.
Your journey abroad is not just about providing for others. It is also about growing, discovering your strength, and creating a meaningful life wherever you are.”
