Goal
By the end of this lesson I can find, say and continue an AB and an ABC pattern, and count objects up to 10.
1. Warm-up (5 minutes)
Clap and tap with your child: clap – tap – clap – tap. Ask, “What comes next?” Then try clap – clap – stomp.
2. Learn
A pattern is something that repeats in the same order.
- AB pattern: 🔴🔵🔴🔵🔴🔵 (red, blue, red, blue …)
- ABC pattern: 🍌🍇🍌🍇 (apple, banana, grapes …)
- AAB pattern: 🌙🌙
Say the pattern out loud: “red, blue, red, blue” helps children hear the repeat.
3. Worked example
Lay out spoons and forks: spoon, fork, spoon, fork, spoon, ___.
Point and say together: “spoon, fork, spoon, fork, spoon …” Child answers: fork!
Now count: how many spoons? Touch each one: 1, 2, 3. 3 spoons.
4. Try it yourself
- 🐶🐱🐶🐱🐶 ___
- 🟡🟡🟢🟡🟡🟢🟡🟡 ___
- 🍌🍇🍌 ___
- 1, 2, 1, 2, 1, ___
- Count the stars:
Show answers (parents)
- 🐱 (cat)
- 🟢 (green)
- 🍇 (grapes)
- 2
- 7 stars
5. Real life (10 minutes)
Go on a pattern hunt at home: tiles, curtains, a shirt, a bilao. Then make your own pattern with slippers, blocks, buttons or crayons and ask a family member, “What comes next?”
6. Check your understanding
Your child can make an AB pattern with 6 objects and say it aloud, and count to 10 touching each object once.
For parents
Keep it playful and short. If your child is stuck, say the pattern together slowly and pause before the missing part.
