Goal
By the end of this lesson I can write a paragraph with a topic sentence, three supporting details and a closing sentence.
1. Warm-up (5 minutes)
Say out loud: “My favourite food is … because …” Give three reasons. You just planned a paragraph!
2. Learn: the paragraph sandwich
| Part | Job |
|---|---|
| Top bread – topic sentence | Tells the main idea. |
| Fillings – 3 supporting details | Reasons, facts or examples. Use linking words: first, also, another reason, finally. |
| Bottom bread – closing sentence | Says the main idea again in new words. |
3. Worked example
Topic: Why Filipinos love rice
Rice is the favourite food of many Filipino families. First, it goes well with almost every ulam, from adobo to sinigang. Also, it is filling, so it gives us energy for school and work. Another reason is that rice is grown in many provinces, so it is easy to find. For these reasons, a Filipino meal does not feel complete without rice.
4. Try it yourself
- Underline the topic sentence: “Dogs make great pets. They are loyal. They protect the house. They are fun to play with. That is why many families have a dog.”
- Write one supporting detail for: “Rainy season can be fun.”
- Which linking word fits? “____, recess gives us time to rest.”
- Write a closing sentence for a paragraph about why reading is important.
- Write your own 5-sentence paragraph about your best friend.
Show answers (parents)
- “Dogs make great pets.”
- Example: “We can play in puddles and watch the rain with hot chocolate.”
- First (or Also / Another reason).
- Example: “Reading every day helps us learn, imagine and grow.”
- Check: 1 topic sentence + 3 details with linking words + 1 closing sentence.
5. Real life (10 minutes)
Write a short paragraph to a lolo, lola or tita telling them about your week. Read it aloud to a family member.
6. Check your understanding
Draw the paragraph sandwich and label each part.
For parents
Praise the structure first, then fix spelling. Ask, “What is your main idea?” before your child starts writing.
