Goal
By the end of this lesson I can write a clear job post, list must-have and nice-to-have requirements, and screen CVs fairly using a simple scorecard.
1. Warm-up (5 minutes)
Look at any job ad online. Underline the duties, circle the requirements. Is anything unclear or unfair (for example asking for “pleasing personality” or a specific age)?
2. Learn
A good job post includes: job title · where and how (on-site, hybrid, remote) · 4–6 main duties · must-have requirements · nice-to-have skills · schedule · how to apply and by when.
Fair hiring: requirements must be about the job. Avoid asking for age, gender, marital status, religion or looks unless the law allows it for that role. Philippine law (RA 10911) prohibits age discrimination in employment.
Screening scorecard: score every applicant on the same criteria (0 = no, 1 = partly, 2 = yes). Decide the criteria before reading CVs.
3. Worked example: Front Desk Assistant
Must-have: senior high graduate or higher · good spoken English and Filipino · can work weekend shifts.
Nice-to-have: 6 months customer-facing experience · basic Excel.
| Applicant | Education | Language | Weekends | Experience | Excel | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| A | 2 | 2 | 2 | 1 | 0 | 7 |
| B | 2 | 1 | 0 | 2 | 2 | 7 |
Both score 7, but B cannot work weekends (a must-have scored 0). A goes to interview first.
4. Try it yourself
- Name three things every job post should include.
- Rewrite fairly: “Female, 20–25 years old, pleasing personality”.
- Why decide scorecard criteria before reading CVs?
- What is the difference between a must-have and a nice-to-have?
- An applicant scores high overall but 0 on a must-have. What do you do?
Show answers
- Any three: title, duties, requirements, schedule/location, how to apply, deadline.
- Example: “Friendly and professional with customers; clear spoken English and Filipino.”
- So every applicant is judged on the same standard and personal bias is reduced.
- A must-have is required to do the job; a nice-to-have is a bonus.
- Do not move them forward for this role (unless the requirement can be trained quickly); keep them on file for other roles.
5. Real-life practice (10 minutes)
Write a job post for a role you know (cashier, VA, tutor). Make a 5-criteria scorecard for it.
6. Check your understanding
Finish: A fair requirement is one that …
