- Session One: Course Overview1
- Session Two: Why Are Research Skills Important? In this session, we will explore the benefits of good research skills and think of some scenarios where research skills might be useful. Then, we will start discussing what skills can help us find information effectively.1
- Session Three: Basic SkillsIn the last session, we talked about some other skills that can help us find reliable information effectively and efficiently. Three of these skills are at the top of our list: reading, note-taking, and recall. In this session, we will share a model that can be used to analyze, read, and summarize any kind of information. We will also talk about ways to improve memory skills.3
- Session Four: Planning Your Research StrategyOnce sources have been read and notes taken, we should have a better idea of what our research presentation should include. But wait! There are a few more things that that should be done before writing starts. In this session, we will talk about three main things to do before we start writing. The first part is to create a focal point. The second part is expanding this single point into a one-minute pitch. Finally, we will write an outline to guide the actual writing.3
- Session Five: Where to Look and What to Look ForSo far, we have covered skills to help us analyze information and start building a project plan from it. But where do we find good information? In this session, we will discuss the different types of sources that might be used when researching, including which type is preferable (and why). We will also provide a checklist of things to consider in determining if a source is credible or not.2
- Session Six: Finding Information the Old-Fashioned WayIn this session, we will talk about using traditional reference sources, journals and trade publications, and our own network, as research sources. (As we work through this information, write down any ideas for future research.) We will conclude the session with information on the Dewey Decimal System, which is how many libraries are organized.2
- Session Seven: Researching with the InternetThe internet is a wonderful research tool, providing all sorts of information at your fingertips! Keep in mind, though, that you must make sure that information you find there is accurate. In this session, we will share some ideas for useful websites. At the end of the session, there will be an opportunity to brainstorm some research ideas for an upcoming project.3
- Session Eight: Getting Ready to WriteIn this session, we will share our recommended method for writing outlines, organizing notes, and getting ready to write. While working through this information, students can think about how to apply it to their own notes.1
- Session Nine: Putting Pen to PaperWe have learned a lot about gathering, analyzing, and reading information so far. Now it is time to get to the real purpose of all of this work: writing a compelling research presentation. In this session, we will cover some writing basics, including the four C’s, revision, and documenting sources.4
